"It is solely up to Denmark and Greenland to decide on the future of Greenland," public broadcaster ARD quoted Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil as declaring prior to his departure from Berlin for Washington, referencing the territory's semi-autonomous status under Denmark.

He cites the island's vital strategic positioning and escalating Russian and Chinese naval activity in surrounding waters.
Trump's pronouncements have triggered alarm across European capitals, particularly his refusal to eliminate military or economic pressure tactics for seizing Greenland—an approach certain allies fear could fracture the NATO alliance entirely.
