Germany Demands US Uphold Greenland Sovereignty
"It is solely up to Denmark and Greenland to decide on the future of Greenland," public broadcaster ARD quoted Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil as declaring prior to his departure from Berlin for Washington, referencing the territory's semi-autonomous status under Denmark.
Core tenets of international law—including territorial sovereignty and integrity—bind all nations, Klingbeil emphasized. "We are increasing security in the Arctic together as NATO allies, not in opposition to each other," added Klingbeil, who simultaneously holds Germany's finance portfolio.
Washington has convened finance chiefs from multiple nations to address critical raw material access. Klingbeil previously signaled that American designs on Greenland would surface during informal discussions alongside official proceedings.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly vowed to acquire Greenland through any available avenue—military action explicitly included—dating to his initial 2017-2021 presidential tenure. He cites the island's vital strategic positioning and escalating Russian and Chinese naval activity in surrounding waters.
Trump's pronouncements have triggered alarm across European capitals, particularly his refusal to eliminate military or economic pressure tactics for seizing Greenland—an approach certain allies fear could fracture the NATO alliance entirely.
